Remote measurements of atmospheric parameters and constituents of the atmosphere using an active technique as the lidar have been made possible by the rapid development of powerful laser sources. It has opened a new field for atmospheric physics. The available lidar methods to study the structure and dynamics of the middle atmosphere are described and some of the results obtained from the French lidar stations are presented. These data have led to a better description of the middle atmosphere variability and climatology.en_US
