An energetic X-ray telescope experiment (EXITE), a balloon-borne telescope for observation in hard X-rays between 20 and 300 keV is described. The gondola is light-weight (921 Ib) but rigid enough for launch and re-entry. The telescope is stabilized in alt-azimuth mode and can be oriented with r.m.s. positional stability of ~ 25 arc sec. During nighttime the orientation can be checked in real time by a star field TV camera. For daytime observations a sun tracker is used. The payload has been successfully flown three times with excellent performance.en_US
