The NOAA series of the meteorological polar orbiting satellites carry the temperature and the moisture sounders. In the study reported the vertical temperature profile obtained from the above sounder data for the month of April 1982 has been used to derive the geopotential height of the 500 mbar surface. From this the location of the subtropical ridge has been ascertained. Its comparison with that obtained from wind data has been made. The study suggests the possibility of using the ‘temperature profile’-derived ridge for the seasonal forecasting of the south-west monsoon rainfall.en_US
