Title: Dynamical Processes in the Tropical Middle Atmosphere

Abstract: An up-to-date account of important dynamical processes operating in the tropical middle atmosphere is given. These processes include the wave forcing responsible for the generation of lower stratospheric quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) and upper stratospheric semi-annual oscillation (SAO). The observational features of these two dominant oscillations (QBO and SAO) including recent studies in India are described, and inadequacy of thermal forcing to explain the observed characteristics is stressed. The wave characteristics of the dominant equatorial waves are outlined and their role in generation of QBO and SAO discussed. Some recent observations of 40-50 day wave over equatorial troposphere/stratosphere regions are also included.
