A silicon surface barrier detector is designed and fabricated to observe IX-particles from various radioactive sources. The energy spectrum of monoenergetic α–particles from 2&1 Am source using this detector is obtained with the help of a 256 channel microprocessor controlled pulse height analyzer (MCA). A shift in the peak of the energy spectrum towards the lower channel is observed if the pressure between the source and the detector is increased. This can be used to observe the pressure. A differential counting method is described to determine the pressure accurately. The application of this device in a balloon flight experiment is discussed.en_US
