A preliminary study of the instability characteristics of the lower tropospheric zonal flow over the Arabian Sea during the summer monsoon months over India has been made by utilizing the actual aerological data collected during the Indo-Soviet monsoon experiment (lSMEX) in the year 1973. Necessary conditions for the: occurrence of both the inertia and barotropic types of instability in this region are fulfilled particularly in the layer where a well defined low level jet frequently occurs in association with strong monsoon conditions over the country. Some of the possible effects of the occurrence of these phenomena on the lower tropospheric flow over the Arabian Sea are discussed.en_US
