Abstract: Protein content of 15 species of benthic algae from Bahrain was determined using the dye-binding technique. Protein content was comparatively low and varied from 0.1% (Laurencia papillosa) to 2.8% (Ulva lactuca). Lower values of protein content, as compared to other areas in Indian Ocean, may be due to high saline conditions in the Arabian Gulf waters (sal. 40-60 x 10(-3).
