Abstract: The plasma instability mechanisms previously discussed by G. C. Reid [J. geophys. Res., 73 (1968), 1627] and S. Kato [Rep. Ionosph. Space Res., Japan, 13 (1959), 62] have been applied to obtain the variation of the size of ionospheric irregularities due to changes in altitude as well as latitude. The variation of the size of the irregularities with altitude has been computed and is found to be in good agreement with the recent satellite observations. The latitude variation of the size of the irregularities in E-region is also calculated and successfully correlated with the experimental observations.
