Abstract: Semiconservative behaviour of both Ca and Mg was observed in the mixing zone of the Hooghly estuary; 88% of the variations in Mg and Ca were influenced by chlorinity changes. Percentage addition or removal (PA/PR) was calculated using concept of the theoretical dilution line and significant negative correlation between PA and PR of both Ca and Mg with chlorinity was obtained.
