Bio-optical characteristics like reflectance, absorbance and backscattering of selected stations in the Bay of Bengal are studied. An attempt is made to interpret these results with reference to the chlorophyll concentrations. An existing pigment index developed for Indian waters is tested for chlorophyll retrieval and the mode best suited for low chlorophyll waters is suggested.en_US
