Abstract: Probable ancestry and distribution pathways of Crassostrea madrasensis preston, C. gryphoides (Schlotheim) and C. rivularis Gould based on recent geological findings and observations in the Arabian Gulf are presented. C. madrasensis appears to have the ancestry of C. virginica – C. rhizophorae – C. gigas from the Pacific Ocean. C. gryphoides and C. rivularis are probably descended from C. angulata the Portuguese oyster via the extinct Tethys Sea. The distribution of these 2 oysters to southwest coast of India might have been prevented by the extinct land bridge from India to Madagascar.
