Primary production and nutrients (phosphate, nitrate and silicate) of estuarine water of the river Hooghly around Sagar Island, West Bengal, India were estimated during July 1977 to June 1978. Gross primary production varied from 15.62 to 41.66 mg C/m3/hr (mean, 25.08 mg C/m3/hr). Maximum value was obtained in February and minimum in August. Seasonal variations in the concentration of nutrients were observed. High concentrations of nutrients were encountered during monsoon months (July to October) and low values during the rest of the period.en_US
