X-ray diffraction analysis of clay fractions of sediments from the eastern part of the Bay of Bengal revealed the presence of illite, chlorite and montmorillonite with traces of kaolinite in varying proportions. Non-clay minerals present were quartz, siderite, aragonite and calcite. Four characteristic areas were delineated, based on differences in clay-fraction mineral assemblage in the eastern part of the Bay of Bengal. Latitudinal distribution of clay minerals was indicated.en_US
