Abstract: Iron has both a lithogenous and non-lithogenous component in the recent shelf sediments of the region between Ratnagiri in the south and Indus Canyon in the north. Overall distribution pattern of iron and its partition between the two components of the sediments are described and the possible factors and processes of its incorporation into the sediments are indicated.
