Abstract: The kinetics and mechanism of reduction of trisoxalatocobaltate(lII) ion ([Co(ox)3]3-) by L-cysteine (RSH) has been investigated at 25.5 ± 0.5°e and ionic strength = 1.0 mol dm-3 (NaCI). The reaction conforms to the rate law, -d [Co(ox)3 3-]/dt = k 2[CO(ox)3 3-] [RSH] with k 2 = k 3[H+] and k 3 = (1.64 + 0.14) x 10-3 mor-1 dm6s-I at 25.5 ± 01oC and I= 1.0 mol dm-3 The rate of the reaction decreases with increase in ionic strength and there is no kinetic or spectroscopic evidence of the formation of an intermediate complex of significant stability. The reaction is interpreted in terms of an outer sphere mechanism.
