Abstract: A rapid and sensitive method for the determination of trace amounts of chlorosilanes trapped in magnesium chloride during its dehydration is presented. The method involves the extraction of chlorosilanes from the salt matrix into isoamylacetate and direct determination by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. Optimum extraction parameters like type of solvent, tolerance level of matrix, time, etc., have been determined. Addition of hydrochloric acid prior to separation helps in the quantitative recovery of the chlorosilanes from inorganic matrix. Recovery from the spiked samples has been found to be between 98.5 and 101.6%. Relative standard deviation for replicate analysis (n=4) is < 3.0%.
