Abstract: Nickel(II) and palladium(II) form extractable coloured complexes with 1-phenyl-1-hydrazonyl-2-oximino-1, 2-ethanedione (HPHOED) under optimum conditions. The Beer's law is obeyed over the ranges 0.2-24 and 0.5-12 mg/ml with molar absorptivities being 4.75 x 103 and 6.81 x 103 lit mol-1 cm -1 for Ni(II) and Pd(II) respectively. Interferences due to diverse ions have been investigated. The methods have been employed for the determination of nickel in alloys and hydrogenated oil, of palladium in Pd-charcoal catalysts and of the two metal ions in presence of each other.
