Abstract: A simple, rapid and direct spectrophotometric method has been developed for the determination of ruthenium using 1-(4'-tolyl)4:4:6 trimethylpyrimidine-2-thiol as reagent at pH 1-2.5. Ruthenium forms a non-extractable anionic complex with this thiol which has been solubilized with cationic surfactant (CTAB) and the resulting solution is studied by direct spectrophotometric method. The apparent molar absorptivity is 0.71 x 104 I mol-1 cm -1 at 390 nm. The method has been applied for the determination of ruthenium in synthetic mixtures.
