Abstract: A sensitive and selective method for analysis of Cu(ll) by atomic absorption spectrophotometry in geological samples has been developed. Bis(thiophene-2-aldehydo) thiocarbohydrazone forms a yellow complex with Cu(ll) instantly at room temperature at pH 1.7-3. The yellow complex has been extracted with methyl isobutyl ketone and organic phase analysed for Cu(ll), The limit of detection, 13 ppb which corresponds to 1.3 ppm of the original rock samples, may be reduced considerably by increasing the organic:aqueous phase ratio.
