Abstract: The triphenylphosphine (TPP) initiated polymerization of methacrylic acid (MAA) has been investigated in dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO). But the polymerization of MAA in the system requires the presence of transition metal ions like Fe3+ or Cu2+. Kinetic studies show that the propagation is free radical in nature. Ultraviolet spectral data suggest the formation of a complex between TPP and MAA. A mechanism is proposed, involving a transition metal ion activated dipole interaction between the carbonyl oxygen and the phosphorus atom with the ultimate formation of a methacrylic acid type of free radical.
