Abstract: The effects of [LiCI], [NaCI], [Na2CO3], [KCI], and [BaCl2] on the rate of reaction of hydroxide ion with anionic N-phthaloylglycine (S-) at 30°C and in an aqueous solvent containing 2% v/v CH3CN reveal a nonlinear increase in pseudo-first order rate constants (kobs) with increase in [salt]. The observed data are explained in terms of a mechanism involving ion-pair formation between S- and cations of the salts. The association constants for ion-pair formation are highly sensitive to the valence state of cations and almost insensitive to the valence state of anions of the salts.
