Abstract: Cr(III) Mn(II), Fe(II), Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) p-tolylsulhates have been prepared and characterized. Electronic spectral studies of the complexes indicate them to have M[O6] chromophores via bridging p-tolylsulphato groups, ligand field parameters have been evaluated. The position of the p-tolylsulphate group in spectrochemical series is the order: SO3F- < SO < CH3SO < p-CH3C6H4SO < H2O. These metal p-tolylsulphates form donor-acceptor complexes with nitrogen donors such as pyridine, 2,2'-bipyridyl, quinoline and dimethyl-formamide. Electronic spectral and magnetic moment studies have been extended to these systems.
