The effect of stitches/cm, number of assembly layers and fabric thickness on the sewing thread consumption values has been studied using the lockstitch type 301 and chainstitch type 401. Experimental, regressive and geometrical consumption values are compared and discussed to select the best predictive modelling technique to objectively estimate the thread amount required to seam garments. Compared to lockstitch, the thread consumption using chainstitch includes higher lengths of sewing threads. Moreover, in chainstitch type 401, the results depict that fabric sample thickness does not have the same influence rate as in the lockstitch case. Therefore, among all tested inputs, the stitch type remains the most important parameter in the case of chainstitch. Regarding regressive and geometrical methods, the regressive technique is found more effective than the geometrical method and fitted the experimental results widely. This difference can be explained by the hypothesis used to simplify the determination of an approximate consumption value. The developed multi-linear models allow a fruitful prediction of the consumed thread amount for the experimental design of interest.en_US
