The analysis of the relative, contribution of charge transfer and electrostatic forces in the 'formation of molecular complexes of different substituted naphthalenes with chloranil (pi-pi* complexes) shows that in nonpolar solvents, the charge-transfer force plays the dominant part. In polar solvents, however, the electrostatic force does have an important contribution.en_US
