| Abstract: | The kinetics of the reaction between bis(2,2',6',2" -terpyridine) iron(II), Fe(tpy) and permanganate ion has been studied in sulphuric acid medium using stopped flow spectrophotometry. The reaction exhibit a first order dependence both on the [substrate] and [oxidant]. The influence of hydrogen ions on the rate shows two paths viz., acid dependent and acid independent paths. Protonated and unprotonated forms of permanganate are considered to be the reactive oxidising species. At 25oC the protonated species is ca 106 more reactive than the unprotonated form. The products do not have any inhibitory effect on the reaction. |
