| Abstract: | The intermediate [Fe(CN)6SO3]4- is formed in the reaction between [Fe(CN)6]3- and [SO3]2-. The oxidation of the intermediate to [Fe(CN)6]3- in presence of H2O2 has been studied by monitoring the increase in the [Fe(CN)6]3- absorbance at 420 nm. The rate constant thus obtained is found similar to that for the hydrolysis of the intermediate under comparable conditions. The kinetic data reveal that iron is in + 3 oxidation state in the intermediate and electron is transferred from the bound SO to [Fe(CN)6]3- during hydrolysis. These results are supported by the semi-empirical quantum mechanical calculations for the [Fe(CN)6]4- + SO3 system. |
