Abstract: A new thermally stable heteropolyacid inorganic ion exchanger, antimony(III) molybdotungstate, has been synthesised and characterised. The chemical composition (Sb:Mo:W::1:2.5:1.5), chemical stability, distribution coefficients for eight metal ions, change in capacity with ionic radii, effect of temperature on ion exchange capacity and effect of electrolytesconcentrations on distribution coefficients for certain metal ions have been studied. Its properties have been compared with those of antimony(III) molybdate and antimony(III) tungstate. It has been used as an elegant exchanger for the separation of lead from other metals such as mercury, copper, zinc and magnesium.
