| Abstract: | Complexes of the type [MCl3L2.2H2O] where M = lanthanide(III) ion and LH = schiff base derived from sulphafurazole and thiophene 2-aldehyde have been characterized by elemental analyses, IR, NMR and electronic spectroscopy, conductance measurements and molecular weight determination. The nephelauxetic parameter indicates covalent bonding between the schiffbase and the lanthanide ions. Molar conductances of the complexes in DMF suggest them to be non-electrolytes. The stability constant values show an inverse relationship with temperature. It has been observed that the ligand and its complexes are toxic towards common insects and fungi, which is evidenced by LD50 and % growth inhibition values. |
