The dipole moments of six triarylphosphines, eight triarylphosphine oxides and four triarylphosphine sulphides are determined. An analysis of the dipole moment of tri-p-anisylphosphine indicates appreciable conjugative interaction of the anisyl groups with phosphorus atom. The calculated dipole moments of phosphine oxides and phosphine sulphides are in good agreement with the experimental ones, except in cases where electronic and steric effects of the substituent groups operate.en_US
