Abstract: The available data on the hydrolysis of uranyl ions in sulphate solutions have been analysed. The formation and existence of hydroxo-sulphate complex, (UO)2)2(OH)2SO4, (U22S), has to be taken into consideration to describe completely the hydrolysis of uranyl ions. It has been established that U22S species are formed by the interaction of hydrolysed uranyl species with sulphate ions and not by the hydrolysis of uranyl sulphate complexes. The formation constant of the species U22S varies from 103.01 in 0.025 mol dm-3 sulphate solution to 103.95 in 1.5 mol dm-3 sulphate solution.
