Abstract: Electrochemical reduction of2,2'- and 3,3'-dinitrobenzidines (DNB's) in DMF has been investigated in detail. The polarographic and cyclic voltammetric experiments indicate the formation of red coloured compounds at the mercury surface in the case of both the depolarizers. The red coloured compounds are responsible for the current oscillations observed in cyclic voltammetry. Suitable mechanisms are suggested for the reduction of these DNBs.
