| Abstract: | Effects of solvents on the absorption and fluorescence spectra of 5-hydroxy-1-naphthylamine and 4-hydroxy-l-naphthylamine have indicated that the absorbing and emitting states are the same. The long wavelength spectral band is due to 1A → 1La transition. The proto tropic species observed in the ground and excited singlet states are five and six respectively. The ground state precursor for the zwitterion is the monocation and it is an excited state phenomenon. The dianion of 5-hydroxy-l-naphthylamine and monoanion of 5-methoxy-l-naphthylamine are formed by the deprotonation of -OH group and - C- H bond respectively. |
