Abstract: A new thermally stable inorganic ion exchanger, cerium(IV) phosphomolybdate, has beeri synthesised and characterised. The chemical composition (Ce:P:Mo::1:2:1), chemical stability, distribution coefficients for eight metal ions, change in capacity with ionic radii, effect of temperature on ion exchange capacity and effect of electrolyte concentration on distribution coefficients for certain metal ions have been studied. The quantitative separations of Hg2+-Pb2+, Zn2+-Pb2+, Cu2+-Pb2+ and Mg2+-Pb2+ have been achieved on cerium(IV) phosphomolybdate columns.
