The addition of water to nitrile oxides (RCNO:R = H, CH3, C6H5) has been studied using the MNDO method. The potential energy hypersurface for the reactions has been investigated and the characteristics of the transition states have been determined. It is shown that the addition to these nitrile oxides proceeds in two steps with the formation of a zwitterionic intermediate.en_US
