Abstract: In the oxidation of mono-, di- and tri-chloroacetic acids by chloramine-T the catalytic effect of [Ir(III) + V(IV)] is found to be greater as compared to that of Ir(III) or V(IV) employed alone. A mechanism involving the formation of [Ir-substrate]3+ complex, which later reacts with HOCI in the rate dete mining step has already been proposed for lr(III) catalysed reaction. In the case of catalysis by V(IV) alone a mechanism involving the formation of RNHCl-V(IV) complex in the rate-determining step which later reacts with the substrate in a fast step to give products has been proposed. [Ir(III)+ V(IV)] catalysed reaction has been explained by Ir(III)-substrate complex reacting with RNHCI-V(IV) complex in the rate-determining step.
