Abstract: An analytically solvable, smooth, realistic and composite barrier potential with parameter controlling the flatness at the top, the range and the asymmetry of the barrier is constructed from the generalized symmetry woods-saxon potential. The transmission co-efficient (T) across the barrier is found to be oscillatory in the above-barrier region of energy representing above-barrier resonance (ABR). Using this T with proper angular momentum dependence in one dimension, we estimate the results of fusion cross section (σf) in the cases of few best studied examples namely 16O + 144Sm, 16O + 208Pb and 16O + 186W systems. We find good explanations of experimental data for various systems. The problem of sub-barrier enhancement of σf is addressed with the help of asymmetry in the composite barrier. The generation of ABRs is due to flatness in the composite barrier.
