Serratia marcescens isolated from degraded cattle bone was able to grow on high concentrations of malathion, a non-systemic wide spectrum organophosphorus pesticide. The test organism tested under three different assay conditions very effectively catalyzed the breakdown of malathion. Degradation potential of the test organism was high in nutrient broth than in mineral salts medium and distilled water. Decline in the pH during growth on malathion and assay period indicated the formation of acidic intermediates.en_US
