| Abstract: | A new strain of Streptomyces was isolated from heavy metal polluted soil of industrial (tannery) area of Jajmau, Kanpur, India. The strain was designated as Streptomyces sp. CIMAP A2 based on cultural, morphological and physiological studies. Further, molecular characterization of the strain was carried out based on sequencing 1520 bp fragment of 16s rRNA amplicon, which validated it as Streptomyces species (MTCC 10489). The strain was found to be antagonistic to different human pathogenic bacteria as well as phytopathogenic fungi in dual plate assay. It produced hydroxamate siderophore, which was highly effective in making complexes with the trace elements like Fe3+, Sn2+, Mn2+, Pb2+ and Zn2+. The studies indicate that the strain is a new species of Streptomyces with broad spectrum of antibacterial and antifungal activities. |
