| Abstract: | The stoichiometry, kinetics and mechanisms of the oxidation of HSCH2CH2OH (1) and HSCH2CH2NH (2) by [(bpy)2H2ORulll)2O4+(bpy=2,2'-bipyridine) to the corresponding disulphides have been investigated in aqueous HCIO4. The oxidation is found to be first order each in reductants and the oxidant and the dependence of the second order rate constants on [H+] approximates to k2=a+b [H+]-1. Results have been rationalized in terms of plausible free radical mechanisms. |
