Abstract: p-Methylisonitrosoacetophenone (HIMAP) extracts Pd(II)quantitatively (99.87%)into chloroform from aqueous solutions of pH 0-4 and from solutions containing 0.1 to 1 M acetic acid and mineral acids except HCl. The chloroform extract shows λmax values at 340 and 415 nm. Beer's law is obeyed over the Pd(II) concentration range 0.1-10 μg/ml. The molar absorptivity is 15,810 I mol-1 cm-1 and the sensitivity is 6.7 ng cm-2 at 415 nm. The composition of extracted species is found to be 1:2 (Pd:HIMAP) by Job's continuous variation, mole ratio and slope methods. Interference by various ions has been studied. The proposed method has been applied to the determination of Pd(II) in silver alloy and Pd-catalyst wastes.
