Abstract: Kinetics of chlorination of aniline by trichloromelamine (TCM) in aqueous acetic acid medium, over the temperature range 30°-45°C and solvent composition from 1% to 100% acetic acid have been reported. The orders of reaction in [substrate], [oxidant] and [acid], and the effect of neutral salts like KCI and melamine have been evaluated in 50%, 90% and 100% acetic acid. The results show a novel dependence of chlorinating agent on the nature of solvent system. Kendall's treatment has been applied to compute the acid-independent rate constants with respect to substrate. Plausible mechanisms are suggested.
