The π-π* transition of mesityl oxide, a polar solute, exhibits a red shift in polar and hydrogen-bonding solvents while n-π* transition exhibits a blue shift. A good linear relationship exists between D v, the shift in frequency (for π-π* as well as n-π* transitions) and n, the refractive index of the solvent rather than D, its dielectric .constant. A systemetic variation of v with the increase in D is observed when dielectric constant of the medium is varied by changing the composition of the solvents in solvent mixtures.en_US
